There’s no denying it’s been a hot summer so far. Even here, where Mark Twain once famously quipped that his coldest winter was a summer in San Francisco, it’s been hot. During these dog days of summer, is there anything better than that first sip of a frosty brew? Flying Dog Brewery’s UnderDog Atlantic Lager is a great choice for any craft beer aficionado looking to beat the heat.
Appearance
Beer pours a bright golden yellow. The pure white head settles at a finger and a half but fades quickly leaving wispy lacing. The brew is very clean and clear; refreshing looking.
Aroma
Overall level of aroma is light as expected in a lager. Hints of lemony citrus mingle nicely with biscuity malt. The slightest bit grassy hop notes managers to add a layer of complexity.
Taste
Flavor profile starts with light lemon tartness but evolves to include some sweet malt and stronger than expected hop bitterness (still relatively tame by craft beer standards). A surprising amount of fruity notes are also present as is a bit of herbal character. Light vegetable flavors – corn and cabbage – are also present.
Mouthfeel
Crisp and clean tasting beer. Mouthfeel is light to medium with a medium level of carbonation. Not even a hint of alcohol.
Drinkability
Overall, a nice beer for a hot summer day. Flavor profile is mild and keeps the beer drinkable and refreshing. Slight notes of vegetables like cooked corn are a sign of DMS and, while not necessarily a flaw in a lager, are a bit distracting. Overall grade for Flying Dog Brewery UnderDog Atlantic Lager: B-
