Translated from Spanish, roja means red and in the case Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Ale’s La Roja the word is apply used.  True to style, the beer sports a reddish hue and a tart kick.  Brewed in the Flanders tradition, this funky ale takes advantage of flavors imparted by wild micro organisms and oak barrels.

Appearance
Beer pours a hazy ruby mahogany color.  Head settles at only half a finger; not unexpected from a barrel aged beer.  Lacing is solid.

Aroma
Slight vinegar aroma is the first to hit the nose but is followed by pleasant notes of cherry, apple cider, and and a slight earthiness.  Elements of oak barrel aging are also present and compliment the slight malt sweetness.

Taste
A distinctly tart beer.  Sour cherries, acidity, and a flavor not unlike green apple Jolly Ranchers come through.  Just a bit of funk hits the tongue as does a slight medicinal character.  Oakiness is in the finish as is a relatively strong tannic element.

Mouthfeel
Light, bubbly, and effervescent.  Finish is dry and tannins are slightly puckering.  Alcohol is well hidden amongst the tartness.

Drinkability
We keep trying to get into wild beers and this one has come to closest to converting us.  A flavor profile completely unique amongst beer styles and one that takes some getting used to.  La Roja is drinkable and refreshing on a hot San Francisco day.  Overall grade for Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Ales La Roja: B
