What’s in a name?  William Shakespeare asked that question in the late 16th century and hypothesized that “a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.”  Greenflash Brewery, out of San Diego, CA, understands that a name given to a beer style is just that: a name.

While others spend their time arguing the merits of what makes a beer fit into a particular style, Greenflash focuses on making great brews that may or may not fit nicely into the style guideline.  Their Hops Head Red could quite literally be called the red headed stepchild of the American IPA.  Falling somewhere between an American Red Ale and a big West Coast IPA, this beer is difficult to classify.  But then again, what’s in a name?  This beer is good and that’s all that really matters.

Appearance
Beer pours a slightly hazy dark amber with reddish mahogany hues.  A finger and a half of off white head has excellent retention and leaves a lattice work of lacing.

Aroma
Strong notes of citrus from an ample dosage of Amarillo hops both in the kettle and in the fermenter.  Pine, resin, and fruity notes of melon and mango are also present.  Bready, semi-sweet malt aromas add a very nice balance.

Taste
A strong malt backbone provides a solid foundation for the strong hops flavors of this beer.  A sip runs the gamut of malt sweetness – brown sugar and caramel, to fruit notes – apricot and citrus, and finishes with a lingering bitterness.

Mouthfeel
Medium bodied beer.  Carbonation is spot on.  Finish is on the drier side with very little alcohol presence.

Drinkability
An incredibly well balanced beer.  All the different elements and complexities of the beer play nicely together.  Refreshing and yet very flavorful.  Finishing a pint of of this tasty brew is such sweet sorrow.  That is until you pop the top of another bottle.  Overall grade for Greenflash Brewery Hop Head Red: A
