The state of Maine is best known for the succulent and delicious lobster pulled from the icy waters off its coast. Perhaps less known, is the fact that Maine grows more blueberries than any other state. An even less known fact about Maine: the state cat is the Wild Coon Cat. Allagash Brewing Company is making Maine famous for another reason: well made Belgian style beer.
Allagash Black is a Belgian Style Stout brewed with dark roasted malt and ample amounts of dark caramelized candi sugar.
Appearance
True to its name, the beer pours very dark, nearly jet black. Hints of dark brown can be seen when held to the light. A massive billowing two and a half finger head is off white. Retention and lacing are impressive as it should be with any good Belgian style beer.
Aroma
Dark malt aromas of raw cacao and coffee are quite pleasant. Notes of caramel speak to the candi sugar used in brewing. Belgian yeast imparts its own layer of complexity adding hints of dark fruit like plum and raisin.
Taste
Sweetness of the candi sugar hits the tongue first but is quickly balanced by the coffee and burnt toast bitterness of the dark malts; flavors that give a strong nod to a classic stout. Dark fruit aromas are mirrored in the mouth.
Mouthfeel
Surprisingly full bodied for a beer brewed with a lot of sugar. Carbonation is medium. Finish is slightly dry and 7.5% ABV is warming.
Drinkability
A beer that borrows the best from a classic stout and a dark Belgian beer creates a complex and unique flavor profile. The combination of flavors is intriguing but don’t seem to perfectly harmonize. The drinker is left craving a pure Stout or Belgian Strong Dark Ale. Overall grade for Allagash Brewing Co. Black: B-
