It’s a collegiate right of passage.  It’s a Saturday night tradition.  It’s youthful exuberance on full display.  It is the Drinking Game.  Drinking games come in all shapes and sizes from the classics like Flip Cup, to the extravagant like Sloshball, to the cruel and unusual like Edward 40 Hands.  Here at Hapa’s Brewing we’ve seen them all and while our prime years of knocking back a case of Coors may be behind us, we can still hold our own on the Beirut court.  Today we pass our vast knowledge onto the next generation of drinking game professionals.

Beirut
The debate on the proper name for this game rages on.  Some call it Beirut while others call it Beer Pong.  Regardless of your preference, it is universal on college campuses around the country.  The basic rules of the game are the same where ever you go: set up a triangle of beer cups and shot ping pong balls at the cups.  When a ball is made, that cup must be consumed.  Unequivocally the most popular drinking game, Beirut must be mastered before even thinking about setting foot in Sigma House.

Tip from the experts: Just as in the dating game, try honing in on one target instead of arbitrarily spitting game at anything even closely resembling someone of the opposite sex.

Flip Cup
Another of the classics and fellow member of the tabletop / plastic cup fraternity of Drinking Games.  At its core Flip Cup is a racing game.  Players line up on either side of a table and, in succession, drink their beverage, set their cup down right-side-up, and try to flip the cup such that it lands upside down.  The next player cannot begin drinking until this has been accomplished.  The ability to consistantly flip a cup on the first try is highly coveted skill and will surely make up for you love of the Biebs.

Tip from the experts: “Spill” a small amount of liquid on the table and spread it out over the area where your cup will land.  Doing so will help the cup stick.

A flippin’ good time

Kings
Playing cards are an essential component for many drinking games, and with a name like Kings, it should be no surprise that this game rules the coop.  Rules of Kings vary by a certain degrees, but in general each card value is accociated with a different game.  For example an Ace is commonly assigned a “waterfall” where all players start drinking at the same time and cannot stop until the preceeding player stops.  The game derives it’s name, not from the future leaders of men who play it, but rather from the fact that King cards are a central component of the game.  A player who draws a King must contribute some of his or her beverage to the “King Cup.”  The last player to draw a King must drink that cup.

Tip from the experts: Don’t draw the forth King.

Power Hour
Not a terribly complicated game.  Players take one shot of beer every minute for an hour.  No big deal right?  But that’s sixty 1.5 ounce shots of beer or seven and a half beers in one hour.  That’s almost enough to bring down Charlie Sheen!

Tip from the experts: suggest a nice game of scrabble instead.

Bottoms up… again and again and again
