It’s March 17th and if the green clothes, green mardi gras beads, and drunken mobs didn’t tip you off, it’s St. Patrick’s Day.  Hapa’s Brewing loves St. Patty’s day so to mark this joyous occasion we’ve compiled some fun facts about the holiday.

  • Commonly mistaken for the Saint of drinking (Arnold of Soissons and Augustine of Hippo are known as the Patron Saints of Brewers), Saint Patrick is actually the Parton Saint of Ireland.  Legend has it that he drove all the snakes from Ireland paving the way for lizards to take over the country.
  • The best selling beer in Ireland should come as no surprise.  Guinness Stout accounts for almost half of all beer sales in the country.
  • The Irish are actually the world’s second biggest drinkers of beer behind the Czech.  Sounds like a challenge…
  • The average Irishman drinks nearly 35 gallons of beer per year (42 gallon/year for the Czech).  Average U.S. consumption: a paltry 22 gallons.
  • Leprechauns do more than sell cereal that’s magically delicious.  Irish folklore describes leprechauns as type of fairy whose primary occupation is making shoes and who like practical jokes.  If captured a leprechaun will grant three wishes in exchange for his release.  First wish if Hapa’s every catches a leprechaun:  more red balloon marshmallows.
