In a scene from Pulp Fiction Vincent Vega (John Travolta) notes that “the funniest thing about Europe… is the little differences.” Apparently, Europeans drench their fries in mayonnaise and call a Quarter Pounder with Cheese a Royale with Cheese. Vincent also recalls how in Paris you can order a beer in McDonalds.
Pulp Fiction was released in 1994 to critical acclaim and was nominated for seven Oscars; eventually winning the award for Best Original Screenplay but finishing behind Forrest Gump for Best Picture. In the 17 years since the movie’s release, U.S. fast food restaurants are finally imitating their European counterparts.
Burger King now operates six Whopper Bars, Starbuck is experimenting with serving beer and wine, and now Sonic Drive-In is getting in on the action by offering beer at a Florida location. While ordering a beer at a fast food joint is interesting in its novelty, we’re not ready to buy off the idea quite yet. Is anyone else concerned that a restaurant whose name contains the words “Drive-In” is selling beer?
