Naming a craft beer has become and art in and of itselfMoose Drool, Buttface, and Yellow Snow all grace the shelves of liquor stores around the country.  Iron Springs Pub and Brewery took the opportunity to honor San Francisco Bay Area musician J.C. Flyer when naming one of their IPAs.  In addition to having a name that could just as easily led him to a career as a World War II flying ace, J.C. is also a craft beer aficionado.

Iron Springs, located just north of San Francisco in Fairfax, CA, has an impressive quiver of beer and J.C. Flyer IPA is quickly becoming a favorite.

Appearance
A solid finger and a half of white foam settles on top of a slightly hazy golden orange beer.  Head retention is sufficient as is lacing.

Aroma
Strong notes of ripe citrus are bright and clean.  Orange and grapefruit hint at the usage of ample west coast hops.  Hop aromas continue with piney resin and freshly cut grass.  Malt just peaks through adding a slight sweetness and breadyness.

Taste
Malt shines brighter on the tongue than it does in the nose keeping the abundant hops in balance.  Orange rind and unsweetened grapefruit juice lead the bitter hop charge.  A second sip reveals notes of tropical fruits and touch of spiciness.

Mouthfeel
Medium bodied beer and very nicely carbonated.  Slightly sticky but still quite smooth.  Finish is dry with very little alcohol warmth.

Drinkability
A fine example of a west coast IPA.  Fifteen years ago this would have been considered a huge hop bomb; by today’s standards it’s middle of the road.  Very pleasant citrus and floral notes keep the drinker coming back for another sip.  An enjoyable but somewhat predictable pint.  Overall grade for Iron Springs Pub and Brewery J.C. Flyer IPA: B-
