As the old saying goes, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”  While this might make sense when talking about cars or that wallet you’ve had since 6th grade, it should not apply to beer.  A beer drinker may have a favorite style he or she seeks out, but that should not deter him or her from drinking outside the box.  This week’s Tuesday Tasting examines one of these lesser known styles: Saison.

Saison is a Belgium style ale typically brewed with warm summer days in mind.  The style is characterized by ample fruitiness in the nose and mouth, low to medium malt and hop notes, and a pepperiness either from the yeast used or spice additions.  The Saison we are discussing today is brewed by Goose Island Beer Co. out of Chicago, IL.

Appearance
Pepe Nero is a dark brown beer; almost too dark for the style.  Holding the glass to the light reveals a slight amber tinge.  A tan, two finger head forms and leaves a lattice work of lacing.  Sediment from conditioning can be seen upon a close look at the bottom of the bottle.

Smell
Typical of the style, fruit notes dominate the nose.  Inviting smells of apricot, plum and black cherry rise from the glass.  A slight citrus aroma is also present.  A bit of yeastiness can be detected as well as a hint of alcohol.

Taste
Raisin and prune are the first fruits that come to mind.  Complex peppery flavors develop on the tongue reflecting the use of peppercorns in the brewing process.  A slight sourness is present and is reminiscent of just ripened cherries.  The beer finishes with earthy yeast notes and a gentle bitterness on the edges of the tongue.

Mouthfeel
Medium bodied and plesent in the mouth.  Bottle conditioning has resulted in a high level of carbonation, but is not overpowering.

Drinkability
Overall a very nice pint (or two).  Inviting aromas draw the drinker in and complex flavors bring you back for more.  At 6% ABV Pepe Nero would be considered a bit strong for a session beer, but its easy drinking qualities make it perfect for a summer day.  Overall grade for Pepe Nero: B
